Home βΊ Services βΊ Hedge & Shrub Trimming
There's a difference between a hedge that's been "cut back" and one that's been shaped β between the ligustrum wall swallowed by its own interior deadwood and the crisp green screen you see along the older homes in Capitol Park and West End. Our crew trims hedges the way arborists approach trees, because that's exactly what they are: small trees, with the same rules about where and when to cut.
Most hedge trimming in Tuscaloosa gets done by mow-and-blow landscaping crews with string trimmers and hedge clippers working as fast as possible. The result looks fine for two weeks, then the hedge gets that brown, ragged edge and the interior fills with dead sticks. We work differently:
Not hedge trimmers shredding leaves. A torn leaf edge browns; a clean cut heals invisible.
Old ligustrum and wax myrtle fill with deadwood inside. We thin it out so light reaches the interior and the hedge greens up wall-to-wall, not just on the shell.
Pruning a spring-flowering azalea hedge in February costs you the whole April bloom. We schedule by plant, not by our route.
A hedge is a row of trees. If the base is narrower than the top, the lower half starves for light and dies back β the classic "leggy hedge" problem. We shape with a slight inward slope (wider at the bottom) so the whole face stays green.
Fifteen-foot overgrown privet screens and arbovitae walls are tree work by any honest measure β ladder work, sectional cuts, haul-away. That's us.
The local landscape palette is distinctive. Our regular rotation: ligustrum (the default privacy hedge of every 1960sβ90s Tuscaloosa neighborhood), boxwood around foundations and entryways, wax myrtle along fences and pool screens, gardenia and azalea beds in the shade of the big water oaks, crape myrtles (shaped properly β never knuckled), abelia and forsythia on older lots, and holly screens in the newer Northport and Northriver subdivisions. We also handle the formal specimens β shaped yaupon topiaries and espaliered plantings β that need a careful hand rather than a hedge trimmer.
Tuscaloosa's growing season runs long and hot, and timing changes the result more than almost anything else:
Half our hedge work is the rescue: a hedge that's been left for five years and is now touching the eaves and swallowing the walkway. We cut back hard (within species limits β some plants tolerate renewal pruning, some sulk for two years), thin the interior, haul everything off, and set you up with a maintenance rhythm. The other half is seasonal service β typically 2β3 visits a year keeps a Tuscaloosa hedge crisp through our long growing season.
Hedge trimming is quoted by linear foot or by the job depending on height and condition. Typical Tuscaloosa ranges: foundation shrubs $150β$350, standard privacy hedges $200β$500, and overgrown rescue jobs $400β$900 including haul-away. Seasonal plans price out lower per visit. Estimates are free β text a photo and we'll often quote it without a trip.
Free estimates, honest timing advice, and haul-away included.
